South African Music Research Archive
“South Africa’s musical heritage is not held in vaults or institutions alone — it lives in the memories, voices, and lived experiences of its people. SAMuRA was founded to honour these stories with dignity, accuracy, and cultural respect.”
Our archive exists to safeguard the songs, oral histories, traditions, and creative expressions that form the heartbeat of our nation. We document, preserve, and make accessible the full spectrum of South Africa’s musical identity — across languages, communities, and generations.
— Fritz P. Klaaste, Founder
SAMuRA is an independent, non-commercial archive dedicated to the preservation of South Africa’s musical and oral heritage. We serve researchers, educators, cultural custodians, artists, families, and the public.
We uphold principles of cultural dignity, neutrality, accuracy, multilingual access, and long-term preservation. Every submission is treated with respect and contextual care.
Our work includes archival research, oral history collection, community submissions, cultural documentation, and public access to non-commercial materials.
This website was envisioned, developed, and is maintained by Fritz Klaaste in collaboration with Microsoft Copilot.
